Fracture Injuries
A common injury in both vehicle accidents and slip/trip and fall accidents is a bone fracture. The severity of fractures increases with age. Children’s bones are more flexible and less likely to break. Conversely, as we age our bones become more brittle leaving older adults more susceptible to fractures. The symptoms of a bone fracture are: swelling of the injured area, loss of function in the injured area, bruising around the injured area and deformity of a limb.
There are many different types of fractures:
- Simple: Bone breaks into two pieces.
- Stress: Hairline break that is often not seen on x-ray, but is still very painful.
- Comminuted: Bone fragmented into several pieces.
- Impacted: One Fragment of bone is embedded into another fragment of bone.
- Compound: Bone protrudes through the skin. This is also called an open fracture.
- Complete: Bone snaps completely into two or more pieces.
- Incomplete: Bone cracks but doesn’t separate.
To heal properly it is crucial to get immediate medical attention to realign the bone. The most common realignment procedures are immobilization using a cast or splint and setting a bone through surgery. When surgery is required the procedure is called an open reduction. Surgery is done with either local or general anesthesia. Your physician may insert a rod, pin, plate or screw into the injury to hold the bone in place. These devices may be permanent, or a second surgery may be required to remove the fixation devices. A fracture is always a serious, painful injury.
